Northwestern Hair’s Chicago clinic was born out of Northwestern Specialists in Plastic Surgery on the Northwestern Medicine campus, and Chicago has been the practice’s center for innovation, collaboration, and growth ever since. In October 2026 we launched an initiative built to make Northwestern Hair Restoration the most comprehensive hair loss clinic in the U.S.: a clinic where hair professionals from around the world come to see patients at 3 E. Huron, giving our patients access to nearly every specialty in hair loss:

Business partners for more than 30 years. Both started as master hairstylists and recognized the need for professional women’s hair loss care before most of the industry. They are not medical providers. Their work covers the environmental, nutritional, and scalp-health factors a physician’s workup may not pick up, and it is often the answer when a doctor finds no medical cause.
A course of scalp treatments and products for sebum control and inflammation, with tools to assess scalp and hair health. Scalp treatment before a transplant when a patient has excess sebum or dandruff; and when donor supply is limited, planning together where grafts go and where a hair system will do more.

Master Scalp Micropigmentation Practitioner and founder of Magic Ink SMP in Winnetka. Fourteen years in the field, more than 10,000 sessions, more than 3,500 patients, and the Meeting of the Minds award. He teaches SMP internationally, and patients travel to Winnetka from across the country for his work.
SMP for men: a shaved look with the appearance of stubble across the top; added visual density where dark hair contrasts with a visible scalp; correction of FUT (strip) scars so hair can be worn short; and added density in an FUE donor site where extraction has left thinning or patchiness. SMP is long-lasting, with periodic touch-ups.
Donor-site planning before and after FUE, and the development of Adaptive Trichopigmentation with Dr. Rawlani.
Fifteen years in SMP, and formerly Northwestern Hair’s consultant for women’s hair loss. Her work starts from a fact the field overlooked: SMP designed for men should not be applied directly to women. Women may not want permanence in the part line when more loss is expected, may not accept single-carbon black pigment, and will trade more maintenance for a natural look at the hairline, part, and crown.
Adaptive Trichopigmentation (ATP) for women: pigment placed more superficially than SMP, so it is semi-permanent and exfoliates over months rather than lasting for decades; color-matched pigments instead of black, which do not discolor over time; maintenance on the schedule women already keep for color or extensions.
Developing ATP with Dr. Rawlani, and mapping pigmentation against the future transplant work a woman’s case may need.
Functional medicine, focused on the hormonal side of hair loss — the cause of more than 90% of hair loss in men and the most common cause in women. In men, the rise in testosterone supplementation is driving newly accelerated hair loss that can be minimized with proper hormone management. In women, the drop in estrogen and progesterone after menopause gives testosterone more access to the follicle and produces female pattern hair loss, the most common type of hair loss in women.
Hormone evaluation and management, including whether hormone therapy is appropriate for a given patient.
Hormone workup alongside medical, non-surgical, and surgical treatment, so the cause is treated and not only the result.
Most dermatology practices stop at first-line medications for hair loss, because results take months and the advanced treatments take time. Dr. Kiracofe’s practice is dedicated to hair loss. She does the full workup for dermatologic causes — a smaller share of hair loss, but real conditions that need real treatment — and spends the time with the patient.
Dermatologic diagnosis and treatment of hair loss. Patients are seen at her clinic in the West Loop.
Referral for scarring and inflammatory hair loss, and shared management of patients whose diagnosis needs both a dermatologist and a hair restoration surgeon.
It is a counterintuitive move. The people we invited in could be seen as competitors. We see them as collaborators in two ways:
More options, and the ones that fit a given patient best.
Understanding their craft advances ours.
We have not seen a clinic like it in the United States. We traveled to clinics around the world to find models worth bringing to Chicago and took the best parts of each.
Northwestern Hair does not employ these professionals. Each of them built a credible practice on their own. They practice in our space at no charge and with no financial relationship to Northwestern Hair, and Dr. Rawlani practices in theirs about one day a week — that is how the Deerfield, Winnetka, and Clarendon Hills offices work. They make their own recommendations to our patients, without direction from us, and then work with the group on the plan and on research.
The collaborators came first; the building came second. We did not commit to a second floor at 3 E. Huron until we saw what this group could do together. It opens in 2027.
Hairline and crown design is built on art and on experience with the individual. The design process happens in the original 1950 barbershop we maintain on the mezzanine, where the patient looks at how the hair looked in the past, how it looks now, and where it is headed. Dr. Rawlani’s own artwork [medium: paintings? drawings?] hangs throughout the clinic.

Northwestern Hair Restoration was born at Northwestern Specialists in Plastic Surgery, in the outpatient building on the Northwestern Medicine campus at 676 N. St. Clair St., three blocks from the current office. Drs. Clark Schierle and Neil Fine developed the practice; Dr. Vinay Rawlani joined several years later. A practice that had treated women began treating men, and men make decisions differently — the program did not fit a plastic surgery practice’s model. Rather than end it, Dr. Rawlani asked to make it his practice, after having a hair transplant himself.
He practiced on the Northwestern campus for five years. In 2021 the clinic moved three blocks to 3 E. Huron, because a hospital system is built for insurance-based care and prices a cash-pay procedure higher than it needs to be; a private clinic let the practice lower the price so more patients could afford it. The clinic is still staffed by Northwestern Specialists in Plastic Surgery, Dr. Rawlani works with that office daily, and for Northwestern patients, records and lab results come straight to us.
3 E. Huron has its own history. The mezzanine was one of Chicago’s original barbershops, opened in 1950, and the original barber poles are still outside. When Northwestern Hair took two-thirds of the floor, it kept the barbershop in the other third, in its original 1950 condition, for what it represents about the roots of our field and because the design process belongs in a barber’s chair. The memorabilia stayed: front pages from the JFK assassination (November 1963) and the moon landing (July 1969), items from the Titanic, and decades of collected pieces. Ron Edwards cuts hair there every day. This floor is also where Micro PUE® and ACS were developed.

I went to Northwestern Hair for my hair transplant and was very impressed.
The entire process from scheduling my consultation to my follow up visit was much smoother than I expected.
Dr. Rawlani was excellent. He was very accessible, knowledgeable and down to earth.
It was clear from my other consultations that Northwestern Hair was the most competent hair transplant team in the city.
I could not be any happier with my results. I look very natural. I’ve shown my results to a lot of people including a few hair transplant surgeons. No one could tell.

Yes. Ron Edwards runs a full barbershop on the mezzanine with its own street entrance, open to the public. For Northwestern Hair patients, he also does hair prep before a procedure and the style tune-up afterward.
No ranking of Chicago clinics by results exists, and “best” means something different for a hairline, a crown, or a woman’s diffuse thinning. What you can verify: who leads the procedure, whether the team is permanent, and whether results are shown with graft counts and dates. All three are on this page, and every case in the before-and-after gallery lists its graft count and timing.
Ask three questions at the consultation. Who leads the procedure from start to finish? Who will be in the room? Will I get the graft count in writing before I pay a deposit? Then compare the answers across clinics.
Any licensed physician can legally perform one, which is why the training matters. Dr. Rawlani is a board-certified physician trained in plastic surgery at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago and has performed grafting procedures since 2009.
Pricing is per graft and the same at every Northwestern Hair office, with the graft count confirmed in writing before you schedule. The pricing page (/hair-transplant-cost-chicago/) lists the per-graft rate and typical totals; the graft calculator (/hair-transplant-graft-calculator/) estimates your count.
